The project was for the development of a full city block in the Northern Quarter area of Manchester to create small-scale office units for occupation by small independent businesses. The proximity of the listed buildings on the site meant that careful integration of the new development into the tight urban grain of the area was a key factor in securing planning consent.

The new units reflect the typology of the existing buildings, being three storeys high, approximately 5m wide and arranged as a terrace block sub-divided by internal cross walls to form independent, self-contained units each having direct access from the street.

The elevational treatment is an expression of this approach with the load-bearing masonry cross walls expressed externally and full height glazing fitted between to allow maximum daylight penetration and views out.

Since completion the scheme has won awards at local level and was shortlisted for a prestigious RIBA Award.
