This project, carried out in collaboration with artist Ian Rawlinson, forms part of the expansion of the CUBE outreach programme intended to raise awareness of the North West’s architecture and urban design.

The design response is based on generating a strong brand image for the centre and supporting a broad and diverse range of activities. This led to a strategy for a number of ‘modules’ based on a common kit of parts that were flexible and adaptable enough to support the range of functions required whilst retaining a strong and consistent identity.

The modules take the form of cubes, inspired by the acronym for the centre, that have a similar external appearance when closed but open out to reveal a variety of internal arrangements. The prototype unit, testing the various mechanisms, was completed but the project was mothballed shortly afterwards.
